The Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica's 6 February 2009 directive barring radio and TV from airing 'daggering' songs and simulated-sex dance content (and, controversially, some soca) triggered a public argument. Regulators framed it as shielding children from explicit content; critics on talk radio and in the press called it biased, hypocritical and an attack on dancehall street culture, noting carnival/soca content was treated inconsistently (Jamaica Observer, 'Crackdown on daggering songs, soca', 9 Feb 2009; Broadcasting Commission statement, 2009).
