For much of the studio era the musicians who played on a record were not named on it. A producer paid a session fee, kept the rhythm, and the label carried the singer and the producer — so the Skatalites, the Soul Vendors, the Aggrovators, the Revolutionaries and the Roots Radics are heard on far more records than they are credited on. Much of the archival work on Jamaican music is the work of putting those names back.
