The drumming, song and Kromanti ceremonial practice of the Maroon communities of Accompong, Moore Town, Charles Town and Scott's Hall — descendants of Africans who freed themselves and held territory against the British. It is the deepest continuous African-derived musical layer in Jamaica, older than mento and separate from the commercial recording tradition, and the source of rhythmic and ceremonial elements that surface throughout the music that followed.
