Global Battle of the Bands, Jamaica round (2005)

The November 2005 Jamaican round of the worldwide band competition, organised by Seretse Small: the first time the island's alternative bands stood on one competitive stage. Roots band Live Wyya took the win, and the rock and metal charge, From the Deep, DownStairs and Black Zebra, placed third through sixth, alongside acts running rap-dancehall, neo-soul reggae and grunge-punk.

A seven-judge panel -- Brian Schmidt, Claudette Powell, Freddie McGregor, Marjorie Whylie, Michael Edwards, Sharon Burke and Ibo Cooper -- decided 80% of the result, audience ballot the rest, each band given a five-minute changeover and an eight-minute set of two original songs; the win sent Live Wyya to the global final at London's Astoria that December.
