Rebel Salute no-alcohol/no-meat ethos

Rebel Salute sells no alcohol and no meat on site, and bills itself drug-free, violence-free and family-oriented — ital in the Rastafari sense rather than as a theme.

The policy is the argument. Every other large Jamaican stage show in this archive runs on a bar, and several carry a drink brand in the title: Guinness on the sound clash, Magnum on the talent contest, Red Stripe on Sumfest since 1993. Rebel Salute gave up that revenue at the start and has filled the ground every January since 1994 without it, which is a harder claim to make than any lyric on the subject. It sits in this archive as the standing counter-example to the drinks collection: proof that the bar is a choice the culture keeps making rather than a condition of the music.
