Wapping Thursdays

Wapping Thursdays — also written Whopping Thursdays — is the Thursday-night street dance in Kingston's weekly circuit, held at Mahoe Drive in Cockburn Pen, free to enter, with the drinks and the jerk chicken bought on the street. It completes the week the archive already maps through Uptown Mondays, Boasy Tuesdays and Weddy Weddy Wednesdays: a set of fixed weekly dances that between them keep dancehall a live, participatory form rather than a recorded one, and that function as the place where dances and selectors are made rather than merely played.

This is not the only Thursday dance: the editor identified Original Dancehall Thursday at Rebel T Headquarters as the one meant when this record was first created, and that event is now held separately. Wapping stands on its own rather than being widened to absorb it.
