Ouch Crew

Well supported

The Ouch Crew was a six-woman collective and fashion house — House of Ouch — that set how Kingston's dancehall looked from the late 1980s into the 2000s: coordinated, deliberate, expensive-looking clothes made for the dance rather than borrowed from it, and the glamour that the dancehall-queen aesthetic was built out of.

Its members were Paula Ouch, Nadine Ouch, Debbie Ouch, Nikki Ouch, Sandra Lee and Pinky, working out of the Waterhouse area, and their designs reached the screen in Dancehall Queen (1997). Sources credit Paula Ouch as the founder while other accounts describe the crew as led by Akeem Smith's aunt; the archive records both rather than choosing.

Smith, the stylist who grew up inside the crew, inherited its photographs and video and assembled them as No Gyal Can Test (Red Bull Arts, 2020) — which is why this crew is documented at all, and most of its peers are not.
