Dennis Bovell

Barbados-born, London-raised producer, guitarist and engineer (b. 1953) who did more than anyone to give British reggae its own sound. He ran the Sufferer Hi-Fi sound, led Matumbi, and produced Janet Kay's "Silly Games" — a UK number two in 1979 and the record that defined lovers rock. He was Linton Kwesi Johnson's musical partner across the dub poetry albums, cut his own dub sets as Blackbeard, and was sought out by post-punk acts including The Slits and The Pop Group.
