Jamaican producer who ran the Roots Tradition label in the late 1970s, using a Roots Radics backing band to cut singers including Philip Frazer, Peter & Lucky, Little John and Ranking Toyan, developing a sparse, metallic proto-dancehall sound. He and Henry "Junjo" Lawes were near neighbours in Kingston's Waterhouse district; when Mais relocated to New York around the turn of the 1980s, Lawes took over use of the same Roots Radics band for his own Volcano label.
