Henry "Junjo" Lawes

The producer who defined the early dancehall sound. Working from Kingston with the Roots Radics as his studio band, and with Scientist mixing at King Tubby's, Lawes voiced Barrington Levy, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse and Michael Prophet across a run of records in the late 1970s and early 1980s that reset what a Jamaican rhythm could sound like — sparser, heavier and built for the dance rather than the radio. His Volcano label and sound system carried the results. He was shot dead in London in 1999.
