Faze 4 Sound

Community recollection

Faze 4, a sound system started in 1991 at Wolmer's Boys School in Kingston by Johnathon "Andrew" Kelly and friends — popular in the high school and around parties for a few years. A school sound rather than a commercial one, which is why the clash-tape archives are silent on it; the record rests on first-hand recollection. A Studio One sublabel called Faze Four is a separate, unrelated operation.

A sound system has two modes: the clash, where it fights, and the juggling, where it keeps a dance alive. Cassette tapes of both are the closest thing Jamaica has to a live archive.
