Stone Love Movement

Well supported

Winston "Wee Pow" Powell's Kingston sound, built in 1972 on locally made amplifiers and now the most durable operation in dancehall — a sound that outlived the eras it played through. Stone Love defined juggling culture and the weekly dance as an institution, and its selector roll (Rory, Geefus, Billy Slaughter, Diamond, Scary Gary and many more) reads as a history of the craft. Its tapes are among the most widely circulated documents of Jamaican dance culture.

Debate

One turntable and a single stack, or a surround wall of boxes?

One side

Single central stack and one turntable

The other

Multiple surrounding stacks

Two documented approaches to building a sound, stated neutrally: a purist tradition plays from a single turntable through a single or central speaker column, prizing focus and clarity, associated with sounds such as Jah Shaka, Channel One and Stone Love's central column; another approach surrounds the crowd with multiple stacks for immersive coverage. Neutral framing; no verdict.
