King Jammy's Studio (38 St Lucia Road)

Lloyd 'King Jammy' James's studio at 38 St Lucia Road, Waterhouse, Kingston, ground zero for digital dancehall after Wayne Smith's computerised 'Under Mi Sleng Teng' (Casio MT-40) broke in a February 1985 clash; it doubled as a dubplate/cutting base and launched engineers/producers including Bobby Digital and Steely & Clevie (Jamaica Gleaner; Jamaica Observer 'Sounds of Waterhouse'; World Music Views interview).

Engineer Bobby "Digital" Dixon gave a detailed account of how "Under Mi Sleng Teng" was built there: musician Noel Davey brought in a Casio keyboard with built-in rock-tempo rhythm presets, and Dixon, Davey and Wayne Smith slowed one preset down toward reggae tempo and worked up chords around it on an experimental basis, at King Jammy's explicit encouragement to try new things when there was downtime.

Smith already had the "Under Mi Sleng Teng" lyric idea in mind but no riddim for it; once Davey worked out a keyboard riff to match, Jammy told them to come back the next day to develop it further, and the track, deliberately built with no conventional bass-line, was tested on Jammy's own sound system almost immediately and mashed up the dance.
