After Ruddy Redwood's vocal-less acetate of "On the Beach" tore up a Spanish Town dance in 1967, producers put a "version" on the back of nearly every single: free to press, ready for a deejay to talk over, and the raw material dub was mixed from. The whole version economy — riddims, deejays, dub — stands on this practice.
