It starts with drums carried across the Atlantic and ends with Jamaican music on the world's speakers, and the argument running through it is that these are not separate eras but one continuous transmission: a rhythm kept in ceremony becomes a rhythm kept on record, and each generation hands the next both the sound and the means of making it heard.
