ROOTS, RETURN AND EXCHANGEThe African Route

A root, and a return

Reggae's own name for its central idea is repatriation -- Africa not as metaphor but as a place to actually go. This walk follows that idea in both directions: the reggae artists who travelled to Africa, the African artists who built reggae scenes of their own, the parallel Pan-African current that grew up alongside it in Lagos, and the present-day exchange in which West African artists are now the ones citing Jamaica.
