THE MUSIC THAT BUILT ITS OWN ROOMSThe UK Route
The music came with the people
Jamaican music did not travel to Britain as an export. It came in the luggage of people invited to fill post-war jobs, and it stayed where they were housed: Brixton, Notting Hill, Handsworth, St Pauls. Everything on this walk follows from one fact, that the pubs and dancehalls of those places would not let them in. So they built their own rooms.
