“My slackness never degraded women”

Lady Saw's explicit dancehall in the 1990s drew bans and moral condemnation, with critics casting her as the vulgar nadir of slackness. She answered on a 1996 record, 'What Is Slackness', arguing that the real slackness was social hypocrisy and neglected infrastructure, and in an interview with the UK newspaper The Voice she framed her work as sexual candour rather than the degradation of women (the interview was headlined with her line, 'My slackness never degraded women'), pointing to a double standard by which male DJs escaped comparable censure. Commentators split between reading her as a feminist reclamation of sexual agency and dismissing her as mere vulgarity.
