From the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, gun-talk and slackness dominated the biggest deejays — Shabba Ranks, Ninjaman, Bounty Killer among them — and drew a sustained public argument the Jamaica Gleaner hosted and revisited for decades. One side argues the music helps normalize guns and the gangster ideal, asking whether lyrical content should shoulder blame for a more violent society; the Gleaner explicitly framed the question of whether lyrics bear responsibility for social degradation. The defending side answers that the lyrics are metaphor and reportage — that dancehall reflects the gun reality of Kingston's garrisons rather than manufacturing it, and that pinning social violence on song is scapegoating. The exchange is a free-expression-versus-public-safety standoff that never fully resolved.

In the early-to-mid 1980s, as Yellowman's explicit DJing dominated the sound systems and General Echo's raw style set an earlier template, Rasta-aligned elders and cultural nationalists argued that dancehall had traded roots reggae's redemptive, Garveyite mission for vulgarity. Defenders countered that 'slackness' drew on a long working-class bawdy tradition and honest sexual candour, functioning as a release valve for ghetto life, and that the 'slackness vs culture' binary was itself a moralistic imposition. Across the era the two poles — slack DJs and 'culture'/conscious lyricism — coexisted and traded dominance rather than one simply defeating the other.

Buju Banton, who had ridden slackness and gun-talk hits to stardom, converted to Rastafari and released the roots-inflected 'Til Shiloh in 1995, with 'Untold Stories' drawing frequent comparison to Marley's 'Redemption Song'. Many critics and fans read the record — alongside the parallel rise of Garnett Silk, Capleton and Anthony B — as dancehall redeeming itself and easing the slackness-vs-culture rift, an argument that neo-roots consciousness had matured the genre.
