Valve, transistor, and the wattage race
Well supported
The dance's endless argument: the warmth of the tube against the raw power of the transistor.
Some builders chased watts; the purists chased a tone they refused to give up.
As solid-state amplifiers arrived, sound systems could chase ever more wattage, but many builders never abandoned the valve, prizing a tone they believed transistors could not match.
The warmth and the weight
For the first generation of sounds, power meant valves. The thermionic amplifier gave the dance its warm, high-headroom authority, and imported marques like the McIntosh MC275 became objects of near-religious reverence for a tone operators believed could not be faked.
Then came the transistor. The solid-state transition, led by rugged amplifiers such as the Crown DC300, offered lighter, more reliable and far more powerful stages. Suddenly a sound could chase raw output without a rack of fragile tubes, and the wattage race was on.
Loud as a weapon
Volume was never only volume. In the clash, sound quality became a weapon, and the immersive power Julian Henriques called sonic dominance was engineered through amplification and tuning as much as selection. Bigger amps meant bigger stacks and a heavier grip on the crowd.
Yet the valve never died. Jah Shaka insisted any new amplifier must match the old ones, valve or a transistor built to sound like one. The argument between warmth and power runs, unresolved, through every heavy dance to this day.
