Sound System Clashes

A widely remembered series of international sound-system clashes between Jamaica's Killamanjaro and the New York-based King Addies through the late 1980s and 1990s; accounts of individual results vary.

One of dancehall's marquee sound rivalries (Squingy's Bass Odyssey vs Killamanjaro), clashing repeatedly from 1994-95 (St Ann, Miami) into the 2000s and a 2013 Trinidad rematch; outcome accounts vary by tape and territory.

The early-1980s clashes and transatlantic radio link-ups between British selector David Rodigan and Jamaican broadcaster Barrington "Barry G" Gordon, remembered as a landmark of selector rivalry across the UK and Jamaica.

It is the main reason a Japanese or European sound could be taken seriously against a Kingston one.

The night the clash went global: Mighty Crown of Yokohama took World Clash in New York in 1999, beating established Jamaican and diaspora sounds. A Japanese sound holding the biggest title in the discipline ended any idea that the form belonged to one geography, and the international circuit that followed dates from it.

Guinness-sponsored Jamaican sound clash competition and TV series running in the 2010s-2020s, staging elimination clashes and finals; the 2023 edition featured an international dub-fi-dub with Warrior Sound (Germany) beating Dynamq (South Sudan) in downtown Kingston.
