The Brixton street known as the Front Line: the spine of the area's Caribbean life in the 1970s and 1980s, dense with blues dances, shebeens and sound-system activity, heavily policed, and central to the tensions that broke open in the 1981 uprising. Linton Kwesi Johnson's poems map it. British reggae has no more storied address.
