ZQI (formerly VP5PZ)

Jamaican broadcasting begins here. On 17 November 1939 a station with the callsign VP5PZ made its first broadcast, opening with a statement from the governor, Sir Arthur Richards. It became ZQI in 1940 and ran for about ten years — the island on air for the first time, a decade before Radio Jamaica took over the job commercially.
