The Gleaner's long-running documentation of dancehall's own casualties — pieces cataloguing the deaths and violent experiences of numerous deejays and singers — fed a distinct strand of the safety debate about the music's real-world stakes. Editorial commentary reads the pattern two ways. One view sees tragic confirmation that gun-glorifying lyrics feed back into the artists' and audiences' lives, life imitating art. The opposing view insists the causation runs the other way: performers come from the same violent communities the music describes, so their vulnerability reflects Jamaica's gun problem rather than being produced by song, and blaming the lyrics diverts attention from policing, poverty, and easy firearm access.
